It's Time to Sharpen those Tools

It's one of our favorite times of year at the garden--Spring! The weather is cool, the bulbs are starting to bloom and the trees are ready to prune. Yes, we love to prune our trees and shrubs at the gardens and now is the perfect time for you to start too.

Remember that low lying limb that would whack you in the face everytime you tried to mow under it last summer? Well, now's your chance to finally nip the problem branch while it's still in bud. You won't have any pesky leaves to block your clear view so that you can make a beautiful pruning cut. The tree will thank you later if you prune it correctly now.

So how do you prune correctly? Funny you should ask. We are having our free pruning workshop this Saturday, March 27th from 9am to noon. Dori will teach how to make the perfect three point pruning cut on your shade tree, Susie will show you how to tame your wild shrubs, and Vic will demonstrate how to prune your roses now to have flowers all summer-long. Also come meet Jerry Goodspeed live in person--he might even sign an autograph or two. He will be demonstrating how to prune all fruit trees for an abundant harvest throughout the year.

Hope to see you there. Dress warm and enjoy a wonderful spring morning with us at the Ogden Botanical Gardens. Let's sharpen those tools.

Darn Deer!

While we snapping some shots we noticed that the deer have also been enjoying our spring bulbs. They think that our gardens are their all-you-can-eat salad bar and the only tip they left us that we shouldn't plant tulips at the Gardens.  We do all the planting and they do all the munching--good trade.  The only tulips we get to  to enjoy are little green stubs. Darn well-fed deer!

See what's blooming at the Gardens

Yes, spring has finally arrived and we are so excited to see some flowers blooming in the gardens.  Our spring bulbs are poking out their little heads and giving us "spring fever."  Susie and I went out and took some pictures of the Crocus, Pasque flower, and Chinodoxa just so you could enjoy them too.

We're Back.....

We're ready for a new growing season. We hope to have the building open the week of March 22nd and start working outside by then. We hope that you will have a chance to go to the Standard Examiner Home and Garden Show at the Weber County Fairgrounds. There should be some great gardening classes taught on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you have spring fever this is the place to be this weekend.
